PSP #176: Board Gaming with Lewis & Clark and The Downfall of Pompeii

In today's episode, I talk about Lewis & Clark and whether or not it's a good game for solo play, and then I take a trip to Pompeii, talking about The Downfall of Pompeii's horrible setup and fantastic everything else. After that, I reveal the next Game Club game--tis Chrono Trigger--and where y'all have to play to if you want to participate. Anyway, if you want to be extra cool, you should seriously check out Frontburnr, register, and join our lovely little party. And, if you're feeling extra generous, donate a little money or subscribe to show your support for the site and show(s), it's not free to host the site, the show; to make and record videos, and everything in between. You can also support the site by shopping at Amazon. Cheers, and have a lovely rest of the day.

Kickstarter Picks for the Week of May 19, 2014

What is this post all about? Well, it should pretty straightforward, but, if there's any confusion, this is where I'll be talking about a handful of Kickstarter projects each week, focusing on a few projects that recently launched and a few projects that are about to end. Will I be focusing only on projects in need of funding? No. I will simply be focusing on projects that interest me, regardless of whether they've only raised $5 or raised ten times that of their original goal. Anyway, I think it's about time I got to the actual projects, eh.

Chumpions

  • Ends Wed, Jun 18 2014 1:35 PM CDT.

Admittedly, I'm always hesitant when a Kickstarter campaign doesn't include a video, but Chumpions looks like it might be interesting and, while it doesn't have a video, it does include pictures of tangible components--which is something I'd rather see than a video full of ideas and nothing tangible (or a horrible produced video)--and that's better than nothing. Anyway, I like the idea of Chumpions; y'all go through a dungeon, fighting monsters, collecting loot, until reaching and [hopefully] defeating the final boss, which then leads to a race to the finish line [portal] to find out who wins. It all sounds very simple, like it could potentially be a fun, light game to play with casual gamers--which is not a bad thing despite what some people may think.

More Kickstarter picks can be seen with a little bit of clickage.

Ending Soon: PULL! - A Trap Shooting Card Game

I like card games. I really like card games. Actually, I love card games; I love 'em so much, I carry a deck of regular playing cards with me at all times because, well, anytime is a good time for solitaire--no, I'm not an 82-year-old man. Because of this love affair, I pay especially close attention to every card game that pops up on Kickstarter and one game that grabbed my attention almost immediately was Pull! - A Trap Shooting Card Game, by Chevee Dodd. (Check out his site for a lot of great information about design and all that jazz.)

I included PULL! in one of my weekly 'Kickstarter Picks' posts when it just launched and, now that it's about to end and still hasn't reached its goal--it's almost there and will [hopefully] make it--I'm posting about it again, but this time I'm making sure it gets the spotlight--in other words, it's the only game I'm talking about in this post. So, what is PULL! (other than a card game and all caps, of course)?

PSP #175: Board Gaming with Marrying Mr. Darcy, Superfight!, Ticket to Ride, and The Resistance (Again)

In today's episode, I talk about Marrying Mr. Darcy in depth, essentially reviewing the game and, not wanting to spoil too much, but, I like it quite a bit. After that, I move onto game night--where I played a party game called, Superfight!, my first 5-player game of Ticket to Ride, Rise of Augustus, and, once again, a smidgen on The Resistance. Video Review: Bang! The Dice Game

So, I wrote a review for Bang! The Dice Game, and then I basically reviewed it again on an episode of The Pixelated Sausage Podcast. Well, now I'm here, in video form, review Bang! The Dice Game for a third time because everything's better in threes, right? Anyway, I hope y'all enjoy this review (and my face) and hope it's not too bad because I was (I am) still getting over a sickness that left me a bit out of it.

PSP #174: Board Gaming with Kittens in a Blender, Friday, and Kickstarter; Then, Game Clubbing with Heavenly Sword

In today's episode, I talk about two board games (well, one's a card game): Kittens in a Blender (if only it was real) and the great, solo-only Friday. After that, I go over a few Kickstarter projects and then, happily, finish the Heavenly Sword Game Club--we'll be taking a week breaking before moving onto the next game, Chrono Trigger. (Also, I'm sorry for being sick. Should anyone ever apologize for being sick? No, but I'm doing it anyway, so ha!)

12 Realms: Ancestors Legacy

  • Ends Fri, Jun 13 2014 3:30 PM CDT.

12 Realms: Ancestors Legacy is an expansion for 12 Realms, but, if you're like me and don't own 12 Realms, you can pick up a copy of reprint of 12 Realms, along with a copy of the expansion, Ancestors Legacy. But you're probably wanting to know what 12 Realms is before putting your money down in support, eh. 12 Realms (and Ancestors Legacy) is a cooperative game for 1-6 players that takes place in the world of fairy tales. The base game looks rather simple, but the expansion seems to add quite a bit of variation, mixing in elements of the base game and adding a random element to keep the game exciting. I haven't played the game, but it has piqued my interest and it may just pique yours as well. (This will also, most likely, get funded sooner than later.)

More Kickstarter picks can be seen with a little bit of clickage.

PSP #173: Board Gaming with Bang! The Dice Game, 1969, The Resistance: Avalon, and Baldrick's Tomb

In today's episode, I mention my review of Bang! The Dice Game...and then, basically, review it again on the show. After that, I talk about some board game annoyances--like elitist and vindictive players--while going over a few more games--including 1969, The Resistance: Avalon, and Baldrick's Tomb. Board Game Review: Bang! The Dice Game | Tis quite nice!

Bang! The Dice Game does not replace Bang! [the card game], it simply turns Bang! into a great filler game, removing a lot of complications that makes Bang! last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes--which also makes it a much easier game to learn and teach--bringing the average play time down to about 10 to 15 minutes.

The setup for Bang! The Dice Game is just like the card game; you start off dealing out role cards depending on how many people are playing--the game plays three to eight and, for example, if there are only three players, there's no sheriff and one of each of the other roles is randomly passed out--then you deal one character card, face up, to each player--you don't get to pick between two character cards like you can in the card game--then each person takes the number of bullets equal to the number on their character card--the bullets are used to count health points--and then the game (and the banging!) finally begins.

PSP #172: Board Gaming with Marvel Dice Masters, Shadows Over Camelot: The Card Game, and Kickstarter; Then Game Clubbing with Heavenly Sword

In today's episode, I talk about more Marvel Dice Masters, having played a few more games, now using tournament rules, teaching the game to a few more people as well, and then talk about Shadows Over Camelot: The Card Game, a decent, simplified implementation of the board game, but not at all a replacement. After that, I go over a few Kickstarter projects and then get depressed as Game Club continues with more Heavenly Sword.
