McDroid Gameplay Preview: It's a Thing

Watch Marc play the first two levels of McDroid, a tower-defense game full of robots, strawberries, a cute coating of cel-shaded visuals, and so many strawberries...did I already say strawberries 'cause, strawberries.

RYB Review (iOS)

RYB is making me feel awfully stupid and this may come as a surprise, but I don't like feeling stupid. I don't like being thrown into a puzzle without directions, forced to solve it on my own with not even the slightest clue as to how I can do it, and that's what RYB does. I've played the game for about thirty minutes now, cleared ten puzzles, and still don't know what I'm doing; it hasn't clicked and I keep hoping, with each new puzzle, some switch in me will turn on and, suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, I'll get it, but that's still not the case and I don't know how much more time I want to spend feeling stupid before enough is enough.

And just like that, after taking a break from writing this to play a wee bit more, I finally get it. It's quite simple and fairly obvious, making me feel stupid in a completely different way, but I don't think that excuses the horrible first impression RYB gave me, especially for a mobile game, which, more so than ever, are quite disposable these days--there are so many mobile games coming out each and every day that, if a game doesn't grab one's attention immediately, it's very easy to just delete it and move onto a new one, something I was so close to doing with RYB, until it clicked--however, even though I finally get it, I can't recommend a game that throws the player into the middle of the ocean without a life raft, turning its back while saying, "Don't scream for help, just figure it out on your own."

Breaking up with achievements

I have decided to break up with achievements; we're still going to be friends, we're just not going to live together anymore. What I mean when I say this is, I am going to (try to) stop actively thinking about achievements because they have become a prison, a prison that takes away from my gaming experience more often than not.

For years I have chased achievements and always made sure to check out a game's achievements before I played it so I would know if any were missable, if the difficulty affected them, or any other information I deemed "important." But what was I getting out of this? Do achievements mean anything? Are there any tangible rewards? Will I ever "catch 'em all?" The answer to each question is no and I'm finally ready to accept that.

PSP #280: Superhot is Supercool and Street Fighter V is Supernot

Marc starts off the show talking about The Oscars despite the fact they didn't watch any most of it, followed by a wee little bit about their art and some exciting related jazz. After that, they talk about some anime, like The Boy and the Beast--which will finally hit theaters this Friday--and an anime where a girl became a girl instead of a boy by dropping her balls while running out of her mother's womb during childbirth. And then, in the end, Marc talks about a few games, including the super hot and occasionally super annoying Superhot.

Anyway, that's it and that's all, folks, and, if you're feeling extra generous, donate a little money or subscribe to show your support for the site and show(s); it's not free to host the site, the show, to make and record videos, and everything in between, so, anything would be greatly appreciated, even if you just tell a friend or two about the site and show(s). PSP #279: Rollin' on the River of Flames with Anime and Indie Games

Marc starts off the show talking about their experience getting banned and unbanned from Twitch, and the joy had while watching Triumph's [The Insult Comic Dog] Election Special 2016. After that, they talk about just a wee bit more new anime, including one very, very, very weird show that has more phallic imagery than anyone would ever want. And then, like every other episode, they end the show with a handful of games, including one of Marc's favorite games of 2016, but I'll keep that a secret for now...

Anime Preview: Dimension W is (currently) my favorite anime of the 2016 winter season

I am loving Dimension W and it scares the shit out of me. It scares me because I can't help but expect the things I love to fall apart in the end and I can easily see that happening with Dimension W; at least, I can see the season ending in a way that leaves me unsatisfied and full of unanswered questions. Still, I can't help but love Dimension W six episodes into the season; it's the new anime I look forward to more than any other and I just can't get enough. Seriously, when I'm watching Dimension W, baby, I go out of my head and I just can't get enough.

The reason why Dimension W has my full attention is because it's managed to create both an interesting world story and an interesting personal story thanks to great world building and a cast of fully-realized characters. Dimension W takes place in the somewhat near future after a scientist discovers a new dimension filled with a seemingly unlimited amount of energy--this dimension is, of course, called Dimension W. The way people utilize all this newfound energy is through coils and, because business is business, a company, New Tesla, monopolizes the sale and distribution of coils, which leads to a thriving black market and the creation of bounty hunters--called "collectors"--who find these black market dealers and collect their illegal coils for a reward. And so the story of Dimension W begins, when a collector, who hates coils so much he never uses them, runs into a very human-esque robot powered entirely by coils during one of his jobs.

PSP #278: Charting New Dimensions in Anime with Luck & Logic & Weird Love Triangles

Today's show is another anime-heavy show, starting the show with a little discussion about anime titles and how some people use English titles while others use Romaji titles before eventually tackling even more brand new winter anime, including the fantastic Dimension W and the not-so-fantastic Divine Gate; however, despite all the anime, Marc also manages to talk about quite a few games, too, including a pinball game that brings back a lot of happy memories. A full list of what was discussed can be found below.
