Kickstarter Picks for the Week of May 12, 2014

What is this post all about? Well, it should pretty straightforward, but, if there's any confusion, this is where I'll be talking about a handful of Kickstarter projects each week, focusing on a few projects that recently launched and a few projects that are about to end. Will I be focusing only on projects in need of funding? No. I will simply be focusing on projects that interest me, regardless of whether they've only raised $5 or raised ten times that of their original goal. Anyway, I think it's about time I got to the actual projects, eh.

  • Recently Launched

12 Realms: Ancestors Legacy

  • Ends Fri, Jun 13 2014 3:30 PM CDT.

12 Realms: Ancestors Legacy is an expansion for 12 Realms, but, if you're like me and don't own 12 Realms, you can pick up a copy of reprint of 12 Realms, along with a copy of the expansion, Ancestors Legacy. But you're probably wanting to know what 12 Realms is before putting your money down in support, eh. 12 Realms (and Ancestors Legacy) is a cooperative game for 1-6 players that takes place in the world of fairy tales. The base game looks rather simple, but the expansion seems to add quite a bit of variation, mixing in elements of the base game and adding a random element to keep the game exciting. I haven't played the game, but it has piqued my interest and it may just pique yours as well. (This will also, most likely, get funded sooner than later.)

Black Market Warehouse

  • Ends Sat, Jun 7 2014 8:04 AM CDT.

Black Market Warehouse is a fairly simple card game for 2-4 players that is all about filling your warehouse with items obtained from the black market. As you do this, you can also go after your fellow players as they are all trying to do the same thing. Anyway, I'm always looking for quick and fun card games because I just have a fondness for card games that I can't explain and Black Market Warehouse looks like it has the potential to be a great addition to my already decent-sized collection of card games. Also, and this may turn some people off, Fire Squadron, the designer of the game, has been fairly active so far, taking the advice of backers seriously enough to make a small change to the game--they have decided to change the value of cards (items) from points to dollars--and will continue to take their backers suggestions seriously.

  • Ending Soon

Heavy Steam

  • Ends Tue, May 13 2014 9:00 PM CDT.

Heavy Steam is a game where you get to build your own mech (titan)--the game includes a mini-figure with changeable arms--as you try to outsmart your opponent(s) and destroy their titan before they can do the same to you. One of my favorite things about mech-based video games is the ability to customize mechs in many different ways, allowing you to make one that suits your play style; Heavy Steam seems to feature such customization and, if it can give me the same feeling I get when playing mech-based video games, I think it'll be a winner.

The Pirate Deck - A Quick Card & Coin Game for All Ages

  • Ends Thu, May 15 2014 4:01 PM CDT.

The Pirate Deck is card game all about having the most gold once the last piece is taken from the middle of the table. The Pirate Deck reminds me of Scallywags, but, unlike Scallywag's reliance on randomness and luck, The Pirate Deck looks to be more about strategy and less about luck; though, still fairly light and easy enough that anyone can pick it up and play. Now, it doesn't look like The Pirate Deck will get funded by the time its campaign is over, but check it our anyway and, if you like the idea of the game--it could use some polishing--show your support now so they know if relaunching the campaign in the future is worth it.

Billionaire Banshee: Party Entertainment System

  • Ends Fri, May 16 2014 8:38 PM CDT.

Billionaire Banshee falls in the same family as games like Say Anything and Cards Against Humanity; in Billionaire Banshee, you flip over a Perk card and a Quirk card--which signifies a potential lover--and then everyone else votes if they think you would date such a person or not. After that, each person flips over their vote and tells everyone why they voted yeah or nay. And, last but not least, the person who flipped over the Perk and Quirk cards reveals the correct answer and tells everyone why they would (or wouldn't) date the random combination. I've grown a bit tired of party games, but Billionaire Banshee looks like it might be different enough to grab my attention and, if you're still hooked on games like CAH, you'll probably enjoy Billionaire Banshee too.

Flick Wars

  • Ends Thu, May 15 2014 9:00 PM CDT.

Flick Wars is a game I previewed a while back and now its campaign is coming to an end. As the name suggests, Flick Wars is a dexterity game where you compete against other players by flicking discs that all have their own strengths and weaknesses. Flick Wars is a fun game, but it's a game where you have to supply the fun; you play the game on a tabletop and then add your own obstacles--you can use cups and the like, or LEGO creations if you want to get more creative; if creating the game space yourself doesn't sound appealing, you won't like this game and, personally, I found Flick Wars played best on large tables--like a ping pong table--and not-so-well on smaller tables. All that said, if Flick Wars sounds like fun to you--it can be a lot of fun--don't hesitate to back it.

Anyway, that's it and that's all for this week's edition of Kickstarter picks. If you have any thoughts about the projects mentioned or want to highlight a project not mentioned above, leave a comment below--I'm always interested in seeing what other's think about various projects and what projects interest others.
